ROSÉ Shot 'new trick' on an iPhone and Turned a Breakup Into a Party Trick

'new trick' does not build up to anything. The chorus is the first thing you hear, eight seconds in, and by then the drums, the guitars and the hook have all arrived at once. The song is over in three minutes and one second.

That is the opposite of how ROSÉ opened her last record. Rosie, her debut album, was a set of slow, sad songs. This one was written in May, two days after the Met Gala, with Amy Allen, and she has called it the cutest thing the two of them have made. It is her first release since that album, it belongs to no album, and it is the loudest-sounding quiet record on the chart. We measured why.

'new trick' in five points

• The title is the joke: a heartbreak song where the singer treats recovery as a party trick she has just learned.
• It opens on the chorus. There is no intro, no build, and no key change.
• Garage punk and pop punk, 136 beats per minute, in E major. Three minutes and one second.
• The master is unusually quiet, about 11 decibels below a typical chart pop record, which is why it sounds like a band in a room rather than a wall.

What does 'new trick' mean?

A trick here is something you learn to do and then show off. The song takes the oldest subject in pop, being left, and treats getting over it as a skill: something practised, then performed for an audience. The chorus is the demonstration. She says she is lovesick, picks her heart up off the floor, kicks the door open and announces that she knows the cure. The line that follows the title is an instruction to watch.

The rest of the song keeps that shape. The first verse admits the soft part, that she is emotional, that she put her hopes where they could be seen, and that love which was supposed to have no conditions vanished like a rainbow. The second verse is the conversion: being alone becomes a night out at six in the morning, a memory that used to hurt becomes something she can shrug at. The bridge states the thesis in one line about a girl who has been broken being impossible to stop, and compares getting better to magic.

Why it sounds like a band, not a record

We cut the video's audio into eight equal slices of about 23 seconds and measured the level of each against the loudest.

The shape is flat, which is what you expect from a song that begins at full tilt. The interesting number is elsewhere: the average level of the whole track is about 19 decibels below the maximum a digital file allows. Most chart pop sits around 8. In plain terms, this record was not squashed to sound big on a phone speaker. It leaves room between the drums and the voice, which is why the guitars sound like guitars and why her voice has edges on it.

The tempo is 136 beats per minute and the key reads E major, both of which are ordinary pop-punk numbers. What is not ordinary for a K-pop soloist is the arrangement: no rap section, no drop, no feature, no second language. It is a band song, and the video says so by putting a live band in a gym.

The video: an iPhone and a school uniform

Dave Meyers directed it, and the whole thing was shot on an iPhone 18 Pro for Apple's Shot on iPhone campaign, announced on 9 September. That is a marketing fact, but it also explains the look: handheld, close, and lit like a home video from the early 2000s, with a blue polo shirt and a loose school tie, a purple lollipop, a red sedan and an empty swimming pool.

The reaction is running on that nostalgia. Of the most-liked comments in the first day, the ones that are about the music are about the same thing: that it sounds like the 2000s, that it feels like being a teenager, and that her voice suits rock. The video reached 8.4 million views and 623,000 likes within a day of release.

Where it stands

'new trick' came out on 17 September 2026 through The Black Label and Atlantic Records, written by ROSÉ with Amy Allen and Andrew Wells, and produced by Wells. There is no album attached: her second one is expected in 2027.

It is too early for a chart position.
