About

mymy is an English-language music magazine about the songs the world is playing. We publish two kinds of pieces: the songs at number 1 in the most countries, under Trends, and new songs explained, under New releases.

Why we exist

Most people hear a hit from another country before they understand it. A translation gives the words and loses the feeling: the slang, the manners, the history a line leans on. A Korean listener can love an Indonesian song and still miss what it is saying. We start from what the world is actually playing, then explain what is inside the song.

How we work

  • Trends start from what the world is playing and searching for: YouTube's own daily and weekly charts in more than 60 countries, Shazam's charts and Google Trends, and sometimes listening data we hold. Every piece ends with a section that says where its numbers came from.
  • Song pieces explain the lyric in the order you hear it, with the culture and slang behind it, and check the recording, the charts and what listeners said. We explain lyrics rather than reprint them, quoting a line or two at most.
  • Every piece is read and approved by an editor before it goes up. We publish what we have checked, not as fast as we could.
  • When a number is an estimate, we say so. When we get something wrong, we correct it on the piece.

The editor

mymy is edited by Min Key, a pen name. Min Key measures songs before writing about them, reads lyrics against what listeners say, and approves every piece before it goes up. On the forum, the same editor posts and moderates as u/MinKey.
