Who Is Bulin 47? 'Dame Hombro' Began Outside a Restaurant in Spain
Who is Bulin 47? A Dominican dembow star whose street freestyle in Spain became 'Dame Hombro', No. 1 on YouTube's trending chart at home and No. 4 in the US.
Min Key,
Bulin 47 is a Dominican dembow artist, and 'Dame Hombro', his new song, began as an improvised exchange outside a restaurant in Spain. A young content creator who goes by Kevin Wai and, by most reports, comes from Colombia started it, holding a portable speaker; Bulin answered. On YouTube's trending music charts on 10 October the song was No. 1 in the Dominican Republic, No. 3 in Spain and Colombia, No. 4 in the United States, No. 6 in Panama and No. 9 in Chile. Its video, premiered on 8 October, had 2,513,902 views two days later, at 16:44 UTC.
Who is Bulin 47?
Bulin 47 was well known in the Dominican Republic before October. His YouTube channel has 3.04 million subscribers. 'Calorazo', from three years ago, has 62.9 million views. 'Leo Leo (Remix)', made with AFRIKEN AN and the producer Breyco and released in August, has 15.5 million and was No. 12 on YouTube's weekly songs chart in the Dominican Republic in the chart week ending 1 October, with 'Otra Lagrima', his song with Químico Ultra Mega from 25 September, at No. 81. What October changed is who is looking. In the two days to 10 October, worldwide Google searches for 'Dame Hombro Bulin 47' ran at 14.7 times the rate of the five days before. We leave out his age and legal name, which we could not find in anything he has published himself.
The freestyle
The clip needs no production, and that is its charm. Kevin Wai, known for filming himself with public figures, stopped Bulin as he was about to walk into a restaurant, a speaker playing a dembow beat, and started rhyming. Bulin stopped, rhymed back and danced. The line the papers printed from his answer says he is not playing a part and not bluffing, paquete being Caribbean slang for a lie, and ends on his name: “ya todos me conocen, soy Bulin 47”, everyone knows me already, I'm Bulin 47. Listín Diario, the Dominican daily, reported more than 50 million views across platforms by 7 October.
Then the copies
Within days the clip had a second life that Bulin did not make. Editors used AI to put other faces on his body while keeping his voice and his moves; the ones Listín Diario listed include Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Erling Haaland and the Handsome Squidward meme. Copies of the music followed. A day after the official single, two singles by other acts, both named after the song, appeared on Apple Music, and on YouTube an upload labelled 'AI Cover' passed 60,000 views in four days.
Shazam, where people ask their phones what a song is, shows how far the copies travelled. In the charts we read on 10 October, the official 'Dame Hombro' was No. 45 in the UAE, No. 54 in Saudi Arabia and No. 76 in Egypt. Above it in all three was a track called 'El Vacilón de Bulin', credited not to Bulin 47 but to CRUZFILMSRD, a small Dominican video maker's channel whose newest uploads are versions of other artists' songs: No. 8 in Saudi Arabia, No. 10 in Egypt and the Emirates, No. 15 in Tunisia, No. 23 in Israel and No. 31 in Greece. Vacilón is Caribbean Spanish for a bit of fun. In the Gulf, Bulin's name arrived ahead of his own record, the way 'Mama, Don't Close Your Eyes' by Bjorn Bonebreaker climbed Shazam's charts from Facebook while Spotify's charts still showed no sign of it.
What does 'Dame Hombro' mean?
'Dame Hombro' literally means 'give me shoulder'. In Spanish, lending someone your shoulder means backing them up, and as we read it, that is the story the record tells about itself: a young man with a speaker asked a star to play along, and the star did. Bulin and Kevin made it official inside a week. The song reached Apple Music on 7 October, credited to both and produced by Breyco, and the video premiered on Bulin's channel the next day. The video leans into the copies instead of fighting them. YouTube labels it 'Made with AI', its tag for sounds or visuals that were altered or generated, and a studio party fills up with borrowed faces. Among the top 40 comments by likes, at least four are about the AI.
Two minutes, four seconds
The record runs two minutes and four seconds and, like the moment at the restaurant door, has no intro: the first voice arrives at 0.8 seconds. The main section starts at 0:08 and comes back at 1:33. Between them the track eases off for 13 seconds from 1:01, its quietest stretch after the opening, and from 1:25 the words come at almost five a second for eight seconds, the fastest passage in the song. Our sound classifier has no dembow label. It hears afrobeat all the way through, and reggae and rap in every passage but the last, which is fair for a genre named after a 1990 Jamaican dancehall record, Shabba Ranks's 'Dem Bow'.
What the copies do for Bulin 47
In this story the song matters least, and that is its strength. The moment, a stranger asking a star to back him and the star saying yes, is easy to copy, and every copy, made with AI or not, carries Bulin's name. The risk is the same thing. A copy with a footballer's face can be more fun to share than the record, and on Spotify's daily charts for 8 October, the latest available on 10 October, no Bulin 47 song appeared in any of the 15 countries in the Americas and Europe we checked.
We expect the copies to beat the risk: the official 'Dame Hombro' video passes 10 million views on YouTube by 25 October, four times what it had two days after its premiere.
About the data
- The trending positions are YouTube Charts' lists as read between 16:00 and 17:00 UTC on 10 October; they move during the day. The weekly ranks are for the chart week ending 1 October. Shazam's top 200 was read for 70 countries on 10 October, with Apple Music's listings; Spotify's daily charts, as kworb.net keeps them, were the latest available that day, for 8 October, in 15 countries in the Americas and Europe. Views were taken from YouTube at 16:44 UTC. The search multiple is our own seven-day, worldwide Google Trends comparison for 'Dame Hombro Bulin 47'.
- For the sound, a program cut the official audio into passages and scored how loud each one is, a speech recogniser trained on Spanish timed the words without keeping them, and a tagging model named the genres it heard; the file was erased afterwards. The freestyle line we quote is the one Listín Diario and other outlets printed. Comments were tallied rather than cited.
