'Great Expectation' Meaning: Sienna Spiro's UK No. 1 Loves a Man in Her Head
'Great Expectation' meaning: Sienna Spiro takes the man she imagines over the real one, who answers only when he needs her. No. 1 in the UK for three weeks.
Min Key,
Sienna Spiro's 'Great Expectation' is a love song that takes the imagined man over the real one. The man she pictures lies beside her and holds her gently; the real one answers only when he needs something. The chorus settles the argument for the daydream: if he cannot be what she wants, the hope of him will do.
The song held Britain's No. 1 spot for three weeks in September and has been on the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 weeks, where it stood at No. 41 on the chart dated 17 October. It is the third track on Visitor, her debut album, released by Capitol on 3 July 2026. Spiro wrote it with Omer Fedi and Michael Pollack.
What is Sienna Spiro's 'Great Expectation' about?
In the first verse everything tender happens in her head: he lies down next to her, kisses her, holds her with care, and even saying goodbye comes with withdrawal, the word people use for coming off a drug. Outside her head, she says his name and nothing comes back until he wants something from her.
In the chorus she sings, she says, to know she is alive, and she has already cried every tear she had. The next line, “If happiness is just an illusion”, sets up the claim that he was the best she ever had: if happiness is invented anyway, the invented him counts. The last condition is that the things he says are true, which suggests he has told her he cannot give her what she wants. She takes him at his word and keeps the expectation instead: “All I need is the great expectation of you”.
Read this way, the great expectation is the feeling of waiting for someone, kept for its own sake. The title is also singular. Charles Dickens's novel is Great Expectations, plural, about an orphan who expects a fortune, and the plural version of the song's name turns up in Google's search suggestions too. On her album it has no s: one expectation, of one man.
The second verse opens on the title of a 1965 hit by the Miracles, sung by Smokey Robinson and goes back to childhood. She has been crying over this for years, she says: even when she was young she feared that someone would leave, so she held on for so long. He comes and goes. The facts are plain, black and white in her words, yet she goes back and rewrites the story so she can have him as she wants him. The fantasy of the first verse turns out to be an old habit.
In the bridge she cries and lets the tears dry, then uses a word from church and from court: she testifies. What she testifies to is the plainest line in the song, that he exists inside her mind. The last chorus follows, and a short ending drops the word expectation altogether. Her final words are that all she needs is him.
Either the dream has won and the 'you' of the ending is the man she made up, or, after three choruses of settling for the idea, she admits she wanted the person all along. We hear the second. The song spends two minutes explaining why the expectation is enough, and its last line asks for more.
Sienna Spiro's slow climb to No. 1 in Britain
On the Official Singles Chart it came in at No. 32 in its first week and rose in eight of the next nine, reaching No. 1 on the chart published on 11 September, its tenth week, when it replaced Ella Langley's 'Choosin' Texas'. It stayed on top for three weeks, and the Official Charts Company noted that Spiro, then 20, was the youngest British female artist to have a No. 1 since 2014. Taylor Swift's 'Patient Zero' took over on 2 October, and 'Great Expectation' has been No. 2 behind it since.
On Spotify it is still growing. In the week to 16 July it was No. 123 on the weekly global chart with 9,539,245 streams; for the seven days ending 8 October it ranked No. 19 with 16,638,301, its best week so far. On 13 October it reached No. 15 on the daily global chart with 2,593,319 streams, another new high. On Spotify's daily chart for Britain that day, though, it was third, behind Ashe's 'Stop The Wedding!' and Sam Fender and Olivia Dean's 'Rein Me In'.
All summer the song sat between No. 52 and No. 91 on Spotify's weekly US chart. In the week of MTV's Video Music Awards, held on 27 September, where she sang it, it jumped from No. 73 to No. 40 on 3,255,169 streams, and it held No. 40 the week after. The Hot 100 counted that same week for its chart dated 10 October, where the song peaked at No. 39, before slipping to No. 41. The daily US chart suggests the push is not over: No. 22 on the 13th, its best placing there.
Israel, Malaysia and Indonesia found 'Great Expectation' too
On Shazam, whose charts count how often people use the app to identify a song, it was No. 1 in both Israel and Malaysia on every day our radar read those two charts between 2 and 15 October, and as of 15 October it sat second in Indonesia, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and the UK. Indonesia also comes third in kworb's Spotify totals for the song, after the US and Britain, with 16,825,501 streams counted on Indonesia's daily chart by 13 October, and its weekly Indonesian rank rose from No. 186 in late August to No. 54. A fan channel's lyric video with Indonesian subtitles has close to 3 million views on YouTube.
From solo piano to the loudest chorus at 2:12
The song runs 2 minutes 52 seconds and opens on piano alone, the quietest stretch of the song. Her voice comes in at about 14 seconds. The first chorus starts at 0:38 and the title phrase closes it at 0:58; the phrase is back at 1:52, then at 2:31.
From there each chorus is louder than the one before, and the last, from 2:12 to 2:35, measures roughly 6.5 times the opening piano's level before falling to about a quarter of that for its last 16 seconds. She never sings more than about two words a second. From 1:20 until the final chorus ends, our listening software's list of likely sounds keeps 'Christian music' in second or third place, a guess, but one that fits the video: backing singers in white sing beside her, with a horn section in silhouette, on a red stage covered in white polka dots.
Can America catch up with Britain by November?
The song is still gaining on Spotify in America and worldwide, so we predict two things, each with a date. By 31 October, 'Great Expectation' will be in the top 10 of Spotify's daily global chart, where the No. 10 song had 2,728,003 streams on 13 October; by the Hot 100 dated 7 November, it will rank No. 30 or higher. If it misses both, its biggest weeks were the British ones in September.
About the data
- UK placings come from the Official Charts Company's page for the song and its chart news of 11 and 18 September, read on 15 October 2026; the Hot 100 positions are from Billboard's chart dated 17 October, read the same day. Spotify figures come from kworb.net's copies of Spotify's weekly and daily charts, which trail real time by two days; the latest we used is 13 October, and its country totals count only the days the song was on that country's chart. Shazam places come from the national charts our radar reads once a day; on 10 October it could not read Israel or Malaysia. YouTube view counts are as YouTube's page data showed them on 15 October, about 03:15 UTC. The writers are as Deezer credits them; the release date, label and track order agree on Deezer and Apple Music.
- The lyric, timed line by line, comes from lrclib.net. We quote two of its lines, the chorus line about happiness and the title line, and the rest is our own reading of what it means. Our listening software divided the official video's sound into parts, gauged how loud each was and guessed at the instruments; those guesses are estimates, the loudness scale is the song's own, and we deleted the sound file afterwards.
