The voice listeners keep second-guessing
Is Faouzia Real or AI? She Sang 'UNETHICAL' Live on China's Singer 2026
Faouzia is real, not AI. She sang her 2025 song 'UNETHICAL' live on China's Singer 2026 in July; in October it hit No. 73 on Spotify's global daily chart.
Min Key,
The voice on 'UNETHICAL' is not AI. It belongs to Faouzia, who sang the song on Chinese television on 24 July 2026, in Singer 2026, a contest that Hunan TV broadcast live from Changsha. Born Faouzia Ouihya in Casablanca in 2000, she grew up in Carman, a small town in Manitoba, Canada, and has been performing in public since her teens. 'UNETHICAL' itself came out on 1 August 2025.
Fourteen months after release, 'UNETHICAL' joined Spotify's global daily chart on 29 September at No. 200 and climbed to No. 73 on 19 October. Type 'faouzia ai' into Google and it suggests 'faouzia ai voice', 'is faouzia ai music' and 'faouzia unethical ai'. Someone who meets the song through a Shazam result or a playlist hears one polished studio recording, without the decade of covers and singles behind it.

Who is Faouzia? Nearly ten years of releases before 'UNETHICAL'
Faouzia started posting covers on YouTube at 13 and released her first single, 'Knock on My Door', in 2015. She has released music on her own since November 2024, when she announced she was now an independent artist. She finished fourth on Singer 2024, and the show brought her back this year as one of two returning 'gatekeepers', former finalists sent in to challenge the singers still in the race.
Her round came on 24 July, the first of two sprint rounds before the 7 August final. She challenged Zhang Yuan, took the stage with 'UNETHICAL' and a second song, and held her gate, the show's term for winning the head-to-head. Mango TV, the show's streaming service, posted her 'UNETHICAL' performance on YouTube the next day; it had 2,312,291 views when we read it on 23 October.
Is the voice on 'UNETHICAL' AI? What our tools heard
In the official video, a piano opening gives way to her voice at about 0:14, and the chorus lands at about 0:58, again at about 1:58 and a third time at about 2:55. From 1:59 to about 3:24 the track stays near its loudest with no quiet stretch, and a passage of low strings closes the video. A voice that stays this polished through a long, loud stretch can sound too smooth to be human on a first hearing. pupsies' 'misery.' drew the same question for a different reason: its singer's voice is pitched up and heavily processed. The Singer 2026 clip has Faouzia's voice with no studio around it.
The official 'UNETHICAL' video, on her own channel with 3.06 million subscribers, carries no 'Made with AI' label. YouTube requires uploaders to disclose realistic content made or meaningfully altered with AI, AI-generated music included, labels what they disclose, and sometimes adds the label itself. A missing label proves little on its own. A live television performance is far stronger evidence; an AI-labelled act like Bjorn Bonebreaker credits no singer but itself on 'Mama, Don't Close Your Eyes'.
'UNETHICAL' meaning: a mild word for what the lover puts her through
The lyric is addressed to a lover who watches the singer come apart and never apologises. Across the song she waits for a sorry that does not come, wonders whether it is her own fault for putting the lover on a pedestal, and keeps breaking herself to stay close. The chorus asks the title's question, “Isn't it a bit unethical?”, using a mild word for what the rest of the song describes. The final line turns it into a plea: if the lover ever loved her, they should let her go. Faouzia has not said who the song is about, and we are not guessing.
How 'UNETHICAL' spread after Singer 2026, from Singapore to Nigeria and the US
The order is clear on Spotify's country charts. The first was Singapore's weekly chart for the seven days ending 20 August, where it placed 137th, four weeks after the broadcast. Saudi Arabia followed a week later, then Nigeria and Norway in the chart week ending 3 September, and Malaysia the week after. Singapore and Malaysia both have large Chinese-speaking populations, and Mango TV streams the show abroad through its international app. We found no such link for Nigeria or Saudi Arabia. Nigeria has counted the most chart streams of any country so far, 3,222,124 across its weekly charts, though Germany and the UK each streamed it more in the latest weekly charts, for the seven days ending 15 October.
In the chart week ending 15 October 'UNETHICAL' was on 20 weekly country charts and at No. 134 on the global one, with 8,899,057 streams. On 19 October it made its debut on the US daily chart, in 146th place.
When we read Shazam's charts at about 05:30 UTC on 2 October, 'UNETHICAL' sat in five countries' top 100. By late on 22 October it was in 22, and in seven it ranked inside the top 50: Singapore 17th, Saudi Arabia 20th, Nigeria 21st, Malaysia 37th, Cameroon 39th, Zambia 42nd and Belgium 48th.
Can 'UNETHICAL' climb from No. 73 into Spotify's top 50?
Our forecast is that the climb continues, and we have tied it to two dates. By 30 November 2026, 'UNETHICAL' will have reached the top 50 of Spotify's global daily chart on at least one day; its best so far is No. 73. And the first time we read Shazam's charts on or after 15 November, it will rank 50th or higher in at least 10 countries, up from seven now. Whatever the charts do next, the voice is Faouzia's own, and she has sung the song on live television.
About the data
- Spotify chart figures, daily and weekly, come from the copies kworb.net keeps, read on 23 October 2026; the daily charts run two days behind, to 21 October. Shazam positions come from our own readings of its country top 100s, in 69 or 70 countries, at about 05:30 UTC on 2 October and 23:46 UTC on 22 October. YouTube view counts, the subscriber count and the absence of an AI label were read on 23 October. We listened to the official video with section analysis, speech recognition and an audio classifier, then deleted the audio; the timings are approximate.
- Faouzia's background is from her own announcements and her English Wikipedia entry. The Singer 2026 format, the 24 July result and the 7 August final are from the season's Chinese Wikipedia entry and the Jimu News reports it cites, together with the title of the stage clip on Mango TV's YouTube channel. We quote one line of the lyric, from the chorus.
