The Velvet Sundown released its first album, 'Floating on Echoes', with 13 tracks, on 5 June 2025, a second, 'Dust and Silence', on 20 June, and a third, 'Paper Sun Rebellion', on 14 July 2025, followed by a single, 'Velvet Outlaws', on 17 September 2025.^[1][2] The releases went out through the distributor DistroKid with the band's own name as the label.^[3]

How it was made

In July 2025, a few weeks after the first album, news outlets reported accusations that the band, which had by then gathered more than 850,000 listeners on Spotify, was AI-generated: there was no record of a performance, the named members had no social media presence, and the promotional images looked fake. Deezer's detection tool flagged the music as fully AI-generated. Rolling Stone reported that a man presenting himself as the band's spokesman, Andrew Frelon, had called the music an art hoax made with the AI tool Suno; he then said that statement was itself a hoax and that he had no connection to the band. Within a week the band's biography on Spotify was changed to say that The Velvet Sundown is 'a synthetic music project guided by human creative direction, and composed, voiced, and visualized with the support of artificial intelligence', intended as 'artistic provocation'. By then it had more than a million monthly listeners on Spotify.^[4]
