brakence's 'crystallized' Drew 1,631 YouTube Likes in 96 Minutes. A Hit Needs More

Is brakence's 'crystallized' a hit? Out 2 October ahead of his album marroW, it runs about 44 BPM faster than 'ready or noT', and early listeners loved it.

Min Key,

Still: brakence / YouTube ('ready or noT')

A fan record first: one like for every three and a half early views, but it shares its day with a second song and has no video. Not a chart hit yet.

brakence put out “crystallized” at 04:00 UTC on 2 October, together with a second song, “death rolL”. Ninety-six minutes later the official audio on his YouTube channel had 5,754 views, 1,631 likes and 245 comments. One like for every three and a half views is not what a song gets from people who stumbled on it. Those are listeners who were waiting for it.

They had been waiting a while. marroW, due on 23 October on Columbia, is his first album since Hypochondriac in 2022, which peaked at No. 13 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart, the list for artists who have not yet reached the top 100 of the Billboard 200. He has posted the rollout himself: “ready or noT” in September, these two songs today, “Problem Child” on 9 October, “bitE” and “body” on 16 October, then the album, 18 tracks.

Not the same record as the last one

We measured both singles. “ready or noT”, in its official video, sits at about 118 beats per minute in E minor and runs past four minutes. “crystallized” runs at about 161 in D minor and is over in 2 minutes 41 seconds. It moves differently, too. Its first twenty seconds are the quietest stretch of the track; after that it climbs and stays near full level until the last twenty. “ready or noT” barely changes level at all: the gap we measured between its loud and quiet passages is about a third of the new song's.

The words are a love song made of rock. Being close to someone hardens a feeling the way lava cools into stone, and a garnet stands in for what it becomes. One verse credits a mother figure with teaching him to look after himself, another leaves bitterness and a phone habit behind for the person he is singing to, and the closing rush insists the thing is permanent, not a coat of paint.

What could hold it back

Three things. It is sharing its day: at the same 96-minute mark “death rolL” had 3,525 views, 61 percent of “crystallized”, so the people who were waiting are splitting their first plays. It has no video: the single that came with one, “ready or noT”, had 528,586 views a week after its release on 25 September, and this one is an audio upload with a still image. And the clip that travelled before release was not his. A fan's 24-second snippet of the song, posted two days earlier, had 24,356 views on 2 October, four times the official audio's count at that hour.

Our call

A fan record before it is a hit. Our bet: by 9 October “crystallized” is in none of the Spotify daily top 200s we read, and its official audio ends its first week below the 528,586 views “ready or noT” had after its first. The place this level of devotion can pay is the album. Our second bet: marroW enters the top 100 of the Billboard 200, which Hypochondriac never did, on the chart dated 7 November.
