Four or five days each Diwali: 'Aayi Hai Diwali' on India's YouTube chart

YouTube's daily chart of music videos in India lists the 100 most watched each day. Around each of the last three Diwalis, the song was absent from it until two days before the festival, climbed for two days, peaked on the day and was gone from the list by the third day after.

In 2025 it came in at No. 53 on 18 October with 718,653 views and rose to No. 24 the next day. On 20 October, Diwali, it was No. 1 with 3,248,612; it fell to No. 33 on the 21st and was off the list on the 22nd. Diwali 2024 fell on 31 October, and the run went No. 41, 23, 3, 28 and 81, peaking at 3,847,639 views. In 2023, with Diwali on 12 November, it went No. 34, 11, 2, 26 and 92, and the best day drew 3,764,495.

The upload, a clip from the film posted by the Goldmines Gaane Sune Ansune channel on 31 October 2021, had 46,609,125 views on 13 October 2026. The 14 days it spent on the chart around the last three Diwalis add up to 20,070,186, or 43% of everything it has drawn in five years.

Over five years of Google Trends data for India, searches for 'aayi hai diwali' score zero in a typical week and peak in Diwali week every year. In 2025 the score was 5 the week before, 16 in Diwali week and 1 the week after, on a scale set by the busiest week for 'happy diwali song'. The yearly peak, 6 to 8 from 2021 to 2023, has roughly doubled, to 15 in 2024 and 16 in 2025.

What does 'Aayi Hai Diwali Suno Ji Gharwali' mean?

The title line, “Aayi hai Diwali, suno ji gharwali”, means 'Diwali is here, listen, my dear wife'. Suno ji is a polite, fond way of saying listen, and gharwali, literally the woman of the house, is everyday Hindi for a wife. Ahead of that line, the song opens with a shout of aa ra ra and a call to clap, because a firecracker is about to go off.

From there it is a back-and-forth between husbands and wives. He tells her that the jingle of her bangles has set his heart racing; the answer, sung again and again, is that her man seems to have gone a little crazy today. The aa ra ra comes back between the lines, a noise anyone at a party can join without knowing the words.

The second verse looks around the street. Lamps are burning on every side, and someone asks what they are trying to say. The next line is a stock Hindi phrase, “Kahin pe nigahein, kahin pe nishana”, eyes on one thing, aim on another: one of them is pretending to look elsewhere. We know that old trick, comes the reply, so stop flirting and stop the teasing. Believe it or not, I am mad about you; the season of love has arrived.

Then the song turns to the friends gathered round and gives them a little lecture. Know the bond between husband and wife, it says; learn what life is. Stop the quarrel and choose love. A wife may be fussy, but she is still your wife, and the whole world is held inside that relationship. The chorus returns, and the husband is still crazy.

Aamdani Atthanni Kharcha Rupaiya, K. Raghavendra Rao's remake of V. Sekhar's 1999 Tamil film Viralukketha Veekkam, follows bickering couples whose money runs out, and its title says why: the income is half a rupee, the spending a whole one. The husbands and wives fall out over money and, as the lecture advises, make up by the end; the song puts the making up first and sets it on Diwali night. The film reached cinemas on 21 December 2001, five weeks after that year's Diwali.

We think the song outlived the film because it is about a Diwali night at home, with lamps, firecrackers, clapping and a married couple sparring in front of the neighbours. Unlike a devotional song such as Vishal Mishra's Navratri bhajan 'Meri Maa Ne Bulaya Hai', it calls for no religious ritual, and its hook, the aa ra ra, needs no Hindi at all.

Who sang 'Aayi Hai Diwali', and Himesh Reshammiya's other Diwali song

Six singers are credited on the official upload, with Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik listed first, then Kumar Sanu, Shaan, Ketki Dave and Sneha Pant. The first two also top YouTube's worldwide ranking of artists by weekly views: in the week to 8 October, Alka Yagnik was first for a 209th straight week and Udit Narayan second. The soundtrack, released on Universal in 2001, lists the song as 'Aayee Hai Diwali', five minutes 43 seconds long; the film clip on YouTube runs four minutes 51 seconds.

Himesh Reshammiya's 'Jalte Diye', from Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, a Rajshri film released for Diwali on 12 November 2015, climbs higher every year: No. 22 on Diwali 2023, No. 15 in 2024 and No. 8 in 2025, with 1,828,793 views on the day. 'Happy Diwali', from the 2005 film Home Delivery, has slid from No. 43 to 82 to 97.

Drums, bells and firecrackers: how 'Aayi Hai Diwali' sounds

The film clip opens on its loudest 11 seconds, a burst of drum kit, snare and cymbal. Our listening software tags the singing that follows as Hindi film music and folk music, with bells in it. One section returns three times, at 0:30, 1:57 and 3:38, which is where the chorus sits. At 2:11 the music falls back for the film's own sound effects, a whoosh, a ticking and a burst, the firecracker the song's opening warned about, before a disco-style dance break from 2:23. The software could not make out the Hindi words, so these timings come from the sound alone.

'Aayi Hai Diwali' on 8 November 2026

Diwali falls on 8 November this year, and we will read the chart for each day from the 6th to the 11th. Our prediction copies the last three years day for day: the video enters India's daily top 100 on 6 November, sits in the top three on the 8th and is gone from the list by the 11th, and 'Jalte Diye' makes the top 10 on Diwali day for a second year.

About the data

  • Chart places and daily view counts are from YouTube's daily music video chart for India, read on 13 October 2026 (UTC) for each date from 5 to 27 October 2025, 16 October to 7 November 2024 and 6 to 20 November 2023; dates are the ones the chart gives. That the video was off the chart the rest of the year was checked for every day from 22 October 2025 to 12 October 2026. The total view count and upload date are from YouTube's own page data the same day. Google Trends figures are weekly relative scores for India over five years, not counts. Film details are from the film's Wikipedia entry; the music and lyrics credits are printed on the soundtrack's Universal sleeve, and the singers are as the official upload and Apple Music list them.
  • We read the lyrics in the official upload's description and quote two lines, the title line and the stock phrase in the second verse; the English meaning of the rest is ours. Our listening tool cut the film clip into sections and labelled what it heard in each; those labels are estimates, and the Hindi words were beyond it. The album version is longer and has no film sound effects.
