HUGEL is the stage name of Florent Hugel, a French DJ and record producer whose music is most often filed as Latin house, with Afro house and tech house close behind.[1][2][3][4] He founded the label Make The Girls Dance Records and used its name for his club nights.[4][5][2] His first single as HUGEL came out in 2015, and his first studio album, 'Twenty One', on 26 June 2026.[6][7]
His 2018 remix of El Profesor's 'Bella Ciao' was Germany's official summer hit of that year,[8][9] and 'I Adore You' (2024), with Topic and Arash featuring Daecolm, reached No. 2 in Switzerland and No. 8 in Germany.[10][11] In 2026 'Movin' To The Sun', with Imael Angel and Ultra Naté, reached No. 2 on the UK Official Singles Chart.[12] DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs poll ranked him No. 54 in 2025, his first appearance, and No. 48 in 2026.[4][3]
Early life and name
He has called Marseille his hometown, and he told DJ Mag in 2026 that his family was of Spanish origin, from southern Spain, and that growing up around Marseille's African, Italian, Corsican, Roma and other communities shaped how he understood music.[13][2] His official biography says his mother raised him on funk, disco and soul, which NYLON called his first musical education.[14][15] NYLON reported that at seven he recorded radio mixes on cassette and traded them at school, and that at twelve he bought his first music software.[15]
Rap was his first ambition: he made beats for friends to rap over and named Timbaland, Dr. Dre, Swizz Beatz, Pharrell and Kanye West as the producers he grew up with.[15][2] At about 16 he saw Carl Cox play the Marseille club Bazar, which, he told Beatportal, convinced him to pursue electronic music.[13] He told DJ Mag that his father agreed to pay for a five-day DJ course in Cannes once he had his diploma, and that he then spent his money on vinyl and made regular trips to Barcelona for Latin house records and releases by Masters At Work.[2]
NYLON described him as a former McDonald's employee, insurance salesman and estate agent who kept a day job until DJing paid enough.[15] Biographies say he developed as a DJ in Saint-Tropez, Cannes and Monaco, and Guettapen wrote that he spent about ten years as a resident club DJ before his remix success.[16][17][18]
Discogs lists Florent Hugel and Alexandre Borde as the two members of the house duo KitSch 2.0, credited with remixes from 2009 and original releases between 2011 and 2014, among them 'More Of Your Luv', 'Tonight Is The Night' and 'Housecoholic'.[19][20][21] Hung Medien credits him as a writer of 'Doors Of Your Heart' (2012) by Kitsch Crew featuring Luke Aster.[22][23] The German National Library records 2015 as the start of his work under the name Hugel.[1]
NYLON reported that his break came when he walked up to Robin Schulz's manager, Stefan Dabruck, at Amsterdam Dance Event with a demo and was signed on the spot, and that the two were still working together about ten years later.[15]
Career: Tonspiel, Warner and 'Bella Ciao' (2015–2019)
His first single as HUGEL, 'Coming Home' featuring Jimmy Hennessy, was released on 5 June 2015 by Tonspiel under licence to Warner Music, and spent one week in the German singles chart, at No. 80.[6][11][24] 'Where We Belong' with the British singer Jasmine Thompson followed on 1 April 2016 and 'Baby' on 16 June 2017.[6]
'I Believe I'm Fine', his collaboration with Robin Schulz, was released on 8 September 2017 and included on Schulz's album 'Uncovered' the same day.[24][25] It peaked at No. 29 in Germany, where it charted for 24 weeks, and No. 26 in Austria, and BVMI certified it Gold in 2018.[11][24][26] He also co-wrote Felix Jaehn's 2017 single 'Like A Riddle', and his remix of J Balvin and Willy William's 'Mi Gente' came out on 3 November 2017.[22][23][6]
In spring 2018 he remixed 'Bella Ciao', the Italian partisan song that the Netflix series 'La Casa de Papel' had brought back, in a version credited to El Profesor.[27][28][9] Guettapen reported that the remix was first given away as a free download; its lyric video went up on his YouTube channel on 17 April 2018, and Hung Medien dates the release to 27 April.[18][29][30] It peaked at No. 2 in Germany, where it stayed 39 weeks, and reached No. 1 in Austria, No. 13 in Flanders, No. 14 in Switzerland and No. 25 in France.[11][30][31]
GfK Entertainment named it the official German summer hit of 2018 and ranked it sixth on the German year-end chart, and BVMI later listed it at triple Gold.[8][9][32] Guettapen wrote that it brought him gold and platinum records across Europe and regular bookings at large festivals.[33]
'Signs' with Taio Cruz came out on 8 June 2018 and a remix of El Profesor's 'Ce Soir?' featuring Laura White on 21 September.[6][24][30] 'WTF', featuring the English singer Amber Van Day, was released on 30 November 2018 and built on a sample of Charles Aznavour's 1966 song 'Parce que tu crois', which Dr. Dre had also used.[6][34][35][33] RTL made it the theme of the 13th season of 'Ich bin ein Star – Holt mich hier raus!', which began on 11 January 2019.[35]
'WTF' peaked at No. 21 in Germany and No. 26 in Austria, reached No. 12 on Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, where it spent 26 weeks, and was certified Gold in Austria in November 2019 and in Germany in 2020.[34][11][36][37][26] 'Mamma Mia', again with Amber Van Day, followed on 19 April 2019; 'House Music' came out on 9 August, 'Guajira Guantanamera' on 30 August, and 'I Don't Wanna Talk' with the Brazilian DJ Alok on 1 November.[6][24]

'Morenita' featuring Cumbiafrica was released on Cr2 Records on 25 June 2021.[6] The label said it spent three weeks at No. 1 on Beatport's house chart and reached No. 5 on Beatport's main chart, and Guettapen reported that it reused a vocal by the Colombian singer Martina Camargo.[39][18] He told DJ Mag that 'Morenita' broke through in the United States in 2021 and that he did not invent Latin house but brought it renewed mainstream attention.[2] By December 2024 it had passed 100 million Spotify streams.[15]
'Eyes on You' with Quarterhead came out on Defected's D4 D4NCE on 1 October 2021.[6][16] 'El Sueno', presented by Cr2 as the follow-up to 'Morenita' with vocals by Lina Rojas of Cumbiafrica, was released on 18 February 2022.[6][39] 'Madonna', with the Berlin DJ LOVRA, was his first release on Mark Knight's Toolroom label, on 18 March 2022.[40][6] 'Castle' with Alle Farben and Fast Boy and 'Black & Blue' with Benjamin Ingrosso came out through Warner the same year.[6][24]

He returned to Hï Ibiza for a Thursday residency in the Theatre from 4 June to 24 September 2026.[71] On 12 June he and FISHER opened for David Guetta at the Stade de France.[72][73][59] After a listening party at Wynn Las Vegas on 20 June, he launched the album on 25 June with an afternoon show at Ushuaïa Ibiza and a night show at Hï Ibiza; he told DJ Mag that both sold out and that David Guetta joined him on stage for the album track 'Shine'.[42][74][2]

Musical style
Insomniac's biography says his house music draws on Ibiza and the Latin culture he absorbed there, and Hï Ibiza describes his productions as built on classic Latin house, Afro house and other hypnotic global sounds.[14][71] Guettapen quoted him in 2022 saying that he was not a musician, that he had always loved sampling, and that his aim was records that make people dance.[18]
Many of his best-known records rebuild older songs: Aznavour's 'Parce que tu crois' in 'WTF', Martina Camargo's voice in 'Morenita', Starsailor's 'Four to the Floor', Sister Nancy's 'Bam Bam' and Ultra Naté's 'Free'.[35][18][23][56][6] He described 'Twenty One' to DJ Mag as a sonic self-portrait shaped by the cultures he grew up around, hip-hop in spirit although he is a house artist.[2] At Wynn Las Vegas he said the album covered music for beach clubs, for a restaurant in the south of France and for 6 a.m. at Space Miami.[74]
He told DJ Mag in 2026 that he played three-hour sets every week at his residency and used them to test demos sent to his label, and he told NYLON in 2024 that social media let him make hits without middlemen because radio had to follow tracks that went viral.[2][15]
Make The Girls Dance Records
Make The Girls Dance Records describes itself as a label he founded to find and launch new talent, under the slogan 'Don't do it for the money. Do it for the Latinas.'[5] He told DJ Mag that young Latin house producers began sending him tracks after 'Morenita', which led him to build the label, and that having a label with its own sound was the biggest move of his career.[2] Hï Ibiza said his residencies follow the label's focus on Afro house, Latin house, Afro Latin and classic house.[54]
Guettapen reported that he signed the duo GROSSOMODDO, Damien N-Drix and STV, to the label and brought them to EDC Las Vegas; he had made the KitSch 2.0 track 'Ass' with Damien N-Drix in 2014.[50][21] The label released his 'Andalucia', 'Majnuna', 'One Night', 'Movin' To The Sun', 'Twenty One' and 'H.O.U.S.E'.[6][7]
Residencies and festivals
DJ Mag reported in 2026 that his first time on Ibiza was the night he first played Pacha, almost ten years earlier, and that he had returned every summer since; he told the magazine that he lived on the island for about four months each season and in Miami after it.[2] Biographies list residencies at Pacha and Ushuaïa, and appearances at Tomorrowland, EDC Las Vegas, EDC Mexico, Lollapalooza, Parookaville, World Club Dome, Mysteryland and Burning Man.[14][77][78][54]
His Las Vegas residency with Wynn Nightlife covered XS Nightclub, Encore Beach Club and EBC at Night, and he told 8 News Now that the Make The Girls Dance concept was created in Las Vegas to bring a Saint-Tropez and Monaco style of night there.[64][59][3][74] In 2025 he livestreamed a set from a supermarket on Ibiza.[71] He told DJ Mag that he regarded the Hï Ibiza residency as an achievement 20 years in the making.[2]
