The club MC behind 'Pilé', and a choir no footage shows singing
Is Mauvais Djo AI? No. Is Kano Choir's Gospel 'Pilé' AI? Nobody Has Shown It
Is Mauvais Djo AI? No: the Franco-Congolese singer performed 'Pilé', Congo's name for 'Beat It', in Cannes. Is Kano Choir's gospel 'Pilé' AI? Unproven.
Min Key,
Mauvais Djo is a real person: a French singer with Congolese roots who grew up in Évry, south of Paris, and spent years as a club 'speaker', the MC who works a crowd between records. On 23 October 2026 he stood on the Cannes stage of the NRJ Music Awards, shown live on TF1, and performed 'Pilé' with a choir. YouTube shows no 'Made with AI' label on any of the 18 videos listed on his channel, ten of them official music videos.
The AI question comes from another recording. 'Pilé (Gospel Version by Kano Choir)' has 69.5 million views on YouTube, and it is the 'Pilé' that Shazam users in Africa keep tagging. Nobody has shown whether its voices are human or generated. It is, though, an official release, with his label, Nojoke, named in its rights line.

Is Mauvais Djo AI? Radio, TV and a test of YouTube's AI panel
He talks on camera often. In the two months before the awards he gave TV5MONDE an interview on 3 September, did a week of live sessions on Skyrock's Planète Rap, spent half an hour on Generations radio on 14 October, where he also sang his song '12' live, and spoke to Brut Afrique on 17 October. The NRJ Music Awards nominated him as best new French-speaking male artist and 'Pilé' as French-language song of the year; Anyme won the first and Adèle Castillon the second. RnBoi, whose 'J'assume' we wrote about earlier this week, was in his category.
On YouTube, a video whose sound or pictures were made or altered with AI can carry a 'How this was made' panel headed 'Made with AI'. We searched the page code of all 18 videos listed on his channel for it, after a trial run on a clip that does have it, Bulin 47's 'Dame Hombro'. The panel is on 'Dame Hombro' and missing from all 18 of his. Auto-dubbed videos carry the same panel under a different heading, so we went by the heading.
Is Kano Choir AI? The gospel 'Pilé' with 69.5 million views
That one cannot be settled from what is public. Kano Choir's YouTube channel began on 1 December 2025 and had 186 uploads by 28 October, 135 of them Shorts; its 51 full-length videos are nearly all gospel or choir takes on current French and African hits. Its 'Pilé' went up on 10 April 2026, and the video is one picture, with a few zooms and flashes of light, from start to end. We found no footage of the choir singing, no list of members, no location and no word on how the recordings are made. None of the 51 full-length videos carries YouTube's AI panel either, but that label leans on the uploader declaring it, so here, with no footage to set beside it, its absence settles nothing.
'Pilé (Gospel)' is on record as an official release, issued on 14 May 2026 under both names, with the rights line '℗ 2026 Nojoke Records / Kano Choir'; Nojoke is the label on Mauvais Djo's own releases, and two of the original's four producers, Taliixo and Wiils, are credited as its writers alongside Kano Choir. It had 80,502,815 Spotify plays by 26 October. The English Wikipedia article on Mauvais Djo, as it read on 27 October, called the gospel version AI-generated, but the news story it cites for that says nothing about AI or gospel.
By our software's reading the gospel version keeps the original's key and roughly its tempo, F minor at about 129 beats per minute, and it lasts 2:04 to the original video's 2:36. Our sound classifier hears brass and singing from the first second and tags much of it as gospel music, but nothing we run can tell a synthetic voice from a trained one. Listeners mostly do not seem bothered. Of the 1,160 comments YouTube let us load on 28 October, the 40 most-liked are mostly about the sound, TikTok and the World Cup; five of them say they love it without understanding the words, and one, with 96 likes, says that if it is AI, that is sad. About a dozen comments in all raise AI.
Who is Mauvais Djo? The club MC they call l'Undertaker
By his own account he started in studios at 14 or 15, singing backing vocals and pitching ideas for a rapper friend, then hosted club nights with friends. His first fee, he told Generations, was 100 euros from a shisha-lounge owner after a neighbourhood party. Club crowds started calling him l'Undertaker, after the wrestler, and he named both his projects after it: L'Undertaker, Pt.1 (15 August 2025) and L'Undertaker, Pt.2 (4 September 2026). With MC Yoshi and Kokosvoice he is also one third of the group Triangle des Bermudes. He has not given his legal name in any interview or release we read, so we leave it out.
'Pilé' meaning: Congo's name for 'Beat It'
'Pilé' is what people in Congo call Michael Jackson's 'Beat It', he told TV5MONDE and Brut Afrique; his mother says it that way. By his telling he made the song in under an hour: Pt.1 was one track short, so he asked his guitarist for loops, picked one and hummed a tune over it. It came out on the EP without a video, spread on social media, and topped France's official singles chart, compiled by SNEP, for three weeks from 19 June 2026. SNEP has since certified it diamond, and his next single, 'Maladie', as well.
Mauvais Djo's '4': No. 1 on Shazam in Ivory Coast, No. 15 in France
The song of his climbing fastest this week is '4', a bonus track on the deluxe Pt.2, out as a single on 18 September. Shazam's charts for 28 October put it first in Ivory Coast, second in Cameroon and Senegal, No. 14 in France and No. 25 in Belgium. In France it jumped from No. 49 to No. 15 on SNEP's singles chart for the week of 23 October, and on 26 October it stood sixth among Spotify's most-played songs in France.
The single lasts 2:20, but the video runs 3:36 and has a second part the streaming version lacks. YouTube loaded 60 comments for us; seven of the 40 with most likes, including the top one, ask for that longer cut on the streaming services. At its current pace, we expect '4' to reach the top 10 of SNEP's singles chart on or before the list dated 20 November 2026.
Footage of Kano Choir singing would settle whether the gospel 'Pilé' is AI, and so would a statement from the choir or from Mauvais Djo on how it was made. We found neither.
About the data
- The YouTube pages, view counts and panels were read on 28 October 2026 between about 21:00 and 23:00 UTC, and the comments the same day. Shazam ranks were read that evening from its per-country Top 200 lists; French chart places are SNEP's singles chart for the week of 23 October and its certification database; Spotify places come from kworb.net's mirror of the French daily chart for 26 October and its count of plays. Release dates, rights lines and writer credits come from Apple Music, Deezer and the tracks YouTube generates from the labels' data. What he says about his career, the nickname and the title 'Pilé' is our summary of his interviews with TV5MONDE (3 September), Generations (14 October), Brut Afrique (17 October) and DOSE RAP (4 October). YouTube's automatic captions give the song as 'Billie Jean' in the TV5MONDE interview and 'bilite' in the Brut one; our own speech model, run on the same seconds of both, hears 'Billit', ending in a t with no 'Jean', which fits 'Beat It', the title the Congolese press agency ACP gave when it quoted the TV5MONDE interview on 5 September. The NRJ Music Awards nominations and winners are from the published results of 23 October.
- The sound of the official 'Pilé' video and of Kano Choir's upload was analysed on 28 October (UTC), then deleted; tempo and key are our software's estimates, and its sound labels are guesses about instruments and styles, not a test for synthetic voices. No lyric is quoted.
